This course will allow students to develop an understanding of communication theory as applied to digital design. In addition they will enhance their ability to create, as well as evaluate, effective digital art and design while developing their ingenuity and artistic potential to the fullest extent possible.
By the conclusion of this course students will refine their understanding of digital and interactive design while gaining skills necessary for their career. They will gain fundamental techniques along with conceptual and aesthetic concerns while elevating the quality of their portfolios through lectures, visiting guest professionals, research, assignments, critiques, and presentations.
It is pertinent that students attend course critiques. Absences will not be tolerated. One letter grade will be reduced from the student’s final grade for each critique missed.
Students will be evaluated on their ability to relate the terminology and factual aspects of the course. Students will also be assessed by contributions made through class participation. Invited professionals will be asked to critique the student’s work with the entire class. The development of a professional portfolio will be produced. The instructor will determine final grades on all projects and assignments.
Attendance on a regular basis is required. Illness requiring absence from class, critique, or lab hours must be brought to the instructors attention. Students inexcusably late will be marked absent. All students must complete all course requirements which includes attendance and keeping up with course material. Students are expected to put in considerable additional time in the Mac Lab outside of class time to become familiar with the software used in the course. One unexcused absence will be tolerated as long as it is not on a critique day. Any further absences will result in a student’s final grade being lowered a half of a grade for each successive class meeting missed. All missed work must be made up as soon as possible. It is the student’s responsibility to ask the instructor for all material missed due to absence.
Adherence to attendance policy, assignment due dates, and critique schedule is required.
